They would be interested to hear in due course how far the improved methods taught at Kanowit were adopted in the villages.

Item 4. The sub-committee made the following comments on the

They suggested that it would facilitate reference if the name of the Colony appeared on the cover of future reports,

They were glad to see in para.41 full details of how Grants were assessed, and were equally interested in the account of Tuition Fees in para.42. nurt

They noted with satisfaction that plans were being made to develop teacher training and to increase the number of schools (paras. 165-6). However, they were seriously perturbed by the "dearth of certificated teachers" described in para. 51, and by the paucity of teachers in training at the Northcote Training College (para. 26). In view of the fact that it was increasingly difficult to obtain ex-patriate staff it was to be hoped that teachers' salaries would be improved, and the new training accommodation which was to be provided would be filled. They would welcome further information on this important question of teacher-training.

They would be grateful for further information as to what was represented by the figures referring to the 3 training colleges on P.48 in Annexe 1.

They would also welcome further information on the reasons that prevented pupils from staying on to reach the School Leaving Certificate stage (para.169).
